Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park is Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park (about 3,230 km²) and one of the most accessible major safari destinations in the country. Located in the Morogoro Region in southern Tanzania, it lies roughly 280–300 km west of Dar es Salaam (a 4–5 hour drive on a paved highway that actually runs through the park). It forms part of a larger ecosystem linked to Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) and is often called the “mini-Serengeti” or “Serengeti of the South” because of its wide-open Mkata Floodplain, which supports high densities of wildlife in a landscape of grasslands, acacia savannah, and miombo woodland, backed by the Uluguru and Rubeho mountain ranges

Best Time to Visit Mikumi

Mikumi can be visited year-round, but conditions vary:

  • Dry season (June–October) — The best overall period for wildlife viewing. Vegetation is thinner, animals concentrate around remaining water sources (especially the Mkata River and pools), roads are easiest, and sightings of large herds and predators are most reliable. Peak months are typically July–September/October. Cooler mornings and clear skies.
  • Green/wet season (November–May) — Lush scenery, excellent birdwatching (migratory species arrive), and newborn animals. Wildlife is more dispersed and some tracks can become muddy (especially March–May long rains), but the park remains accessible and less crowded, with lower prices. January–February and November–December are often good compromise periods.

What to Witness & Highlights

Mkata Floodplain

The park’s wildlife showcase: vast open grasslands where large herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, elephant, and impala graze, attracting lions, hyenas, and other predators. Visibility is excellent, often compared to the Serengeti.

Lions

Healthy prides are frequently seen on the floodplain, resting on termite mounds, under trees, or hunting. Some tree-climbing behavior has been noted.

Hippos and crocodiles

Concentrated at the permanent Hippo Pools.

Birdlife

Over 400 species, including lilac-breasted rollers, bateleur eagles, hornbills, fish eagles, southern ground hornbills, and many waterbirds. Strong year-round but especially rewarding in the green season.
