Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago in the Indian Ocean, about 35 km (22 miles) off the coast of mainland Tanzania in East Africa. It consists of two main islands—Unguja (commonly called Zanzibar Island) and Pemba—plus many smaller islands. The capital is Zanzibar City, whose historic heart, Stone Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Best Time to Visit Zanzibar

Zanzibar has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round (typically 25–33°C / 77–91°F). There are two main dry seasons and two rainy periods:

  • Best overall time: June to October (long dry season). Cooler, drier weather, lower humidity, calm seas, excellent visibility for diving/snorkeling, and reliable sunshine. Ideal for beaches, water activities, and combining with mainland Tanzania safaris. Peak crowds (especially July–August).
  • Second-best window: December to February (short dry season). Hotter and more humid but generally dry and sunny, with warm seas—great for beach time and diving. Busy during Christmas/New Year holidays.
  • Shoulder seasons (good value, fewer crowds): March (before the rains intensify), June, September–October, and November.
  • Months to avoid if possible: April–May (long rains / masika)—heavy rainfall, higher humidity, and reduced water visibility. Some hotels lower prices or close. Short rains in November are usually lighter and more manageable.
